Abdominal Ultrasound

What is an abdominal ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasounds are a noninvasive medical exam that uses sound waves to assess the organs and structures of the abdomen. This includes liver, gallbladder, spleen and pancreas.

They can also be used to check for conditions such as cysts, tumours, obstructions, fluid collects or infection.

As the sound waves cannot penetrate gases, we will ask you to fast to reduce bowel gas.

These are typically done in the morning as the abdomen becomes gassy in the afternoon which can make the visualisation of some organs sub-optimal.

Please fast from food and water for 6 hours prior to your appointment.

An ultrasound takes approximately 20 minutes.
