Service category – test

A BMD, also called DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is a low-dose X-ray test that measures bone mineral content.

It is a non-invasive test that helps assess the strength of a person’s bones and their risk of developing osteoporosis or osteopenia. Osteoporosis is a major cause of fractures.

When the BMD scan is being completed, images of your hips and your spine will be captured. Sometimes, an image of your forearm will be used as a substitute for the hip or spine.

Medicare has frequency restrictions on these scans so depending on your medical history and whether or not you have had one in the past your Medicare eligibility will need to be determined. This will be discussed with you on the day of your scan.
